Emergency Medical Training (EMT) Initial and Continuing Education (CEUs)

The EMT Education division of ATC offers a wide variety of EMT and continuing education (CEU) programs, with our primary audience being EMS personnel in the communities served by Atlantic Health System.

The EMT initial education program is a 220-hour course designed to train individuals to provide comprehensive emergency medical care at the basic life support level to victims of illness or injury. The course is a combination of classroom, skills session, and clinical time. Upon completion of the course, students are able to assess and provide initial emergency care for conditions ranging from simple fractures, stroke, and chest pain to critical trauma, cardiac arrest, and childbirth.

EMT initial certification courses are offered at or near each of Atlantic Health’s medical centers (Morristown, Chilton, Hackettstown, Newton, and Overlook). Please refer to the course listings for exact course locations and upcoming start dates.

Tuition for the EMT initial certification course is $1500 and textbooks must be purchased by the student. We ARE accepting New Jersey EMT Training Fund as payment for the EMT Initial Education course if you are affiliated with a volunteer EMS agency. The NJ EMT training fund covers the cost of tuition only.

To attend the EMT initial certification course hosted by ATC, the following must be completed prior to the course start date:

  • Minimum age of 16 years old
  • Valid CPR card (Healthcare Provider or Professional Rescuer level)
  • Course payment
  • Criminal history background check
  • Up to date immunization history including Tb testing within 1 year

The EMT-Refresher course is a review of the skills and knowledge covered in the EMT Initial course.

In 2012, New Jersey made changes to the EMT program including the refresher programs. Along with your 24 elective CEUs you must also complete the three EMT refresher Assessment and Management programs: Airway, Medical, and Trauma. Each course is worth 8 Core CEUs and may be taken in any order.

ATC holds EMT refreshers regularly at the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy, and at a variety of off-site locations. Private or on-site courses are also available.

Atlantic Training Center is accepting New Jersey EMT Training Fund as payment for the Core Refreshers.

If you are participating with the New Jersey EMT Training Fund, all forms must be presented at the time of the class, completely filled out (TYPED) in order to be allowed entry into the class. We only accept NJ EMT Training Fund forms with original signatures from your squad officer. No copies or faxes will be accepted.

All of our EMS Education programs are approved for CEUs by the New Jersey Department of Health Office of Emergency Medical Services.

We offer a variety of continuing education courses to suit your agency’s needs, including regional and on-site programs.

ALS Education

The ALS Education division of ATC offers educational opportunities for Paramedics and other advanced life-support providers. Our course offerings include Paramedic refreshers, airway courses and other continuing education opportunities.

American Heart Association Training Courses (CPR, First Aid, BLS, ACLS, PALS)

ATC is an Authorized Training Center for the American Heart Association (AHA).

ATC offers AHA CPR training for healthcare providers, businesses, community groups and the general public.

Course offerings include:

  • BLS for the Health Care Provider (initial and renewal courses)
  • Heartsaver CPR (adult and/or pediatric)
  • Heartsaver CPR/AED
  • Heartsaver First Aid
  • CPR for Family & Friends
  • Instructor Courses

The goal of the Basic Life Support (BLS) is to train participants to save lives of victims of cardiac arrest through high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The American Heart Association designed the BLS course to prepare healthcare professionals to perform CPR in both in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings. This course trains participants to promptly recognize cardiac arrest, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations, and provide early use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), as part of a team and individually. A course completion eCard is issued for this course with a re-certification period every two years.

Heartsaver CPR/AED: This course is designed to teach rescuers the knowledge and psychomotor skills they need to recognize a cardiac arrest event and perform CPR with AED use. The CPR section covers Adult, child, and infant CPR and choking, and the AED covers theory and operation of the AED. Successful completion requires passing a skills evaluation. A course completion eCard for Heartsaver CPR/AED is issued for this course with a re-certification period every two years.

Heartsaver First Aid: This course is designed to teach rescuers the knowledge and psychomotor skills they need to recognize emergencies and give first aid. The first aid section covers general principles, medical emergencies, injuries, and environmental emergencies. A course completion eCard for Heartsaver First Aid is issued for this course with a re-certification period every two years.

Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AED: This course is designed to teach rescuers the knowledge and psychomotor skills they need to recognize emergencies and give first aid. The first aid section covers general principles, medical emergencies, injuries, and environmental emergencies. The CPR section covers Adult, child, and infant CPR and choking, and the AED covers theory and operation of the AED. Successful completion requires passing skills evaluations. A course completion eCard for Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AED is issued for this course with a re-certification period every two years.

Family & Friends CPR: The Family & Friends CPR Course teaches the lifesaving skills of adult Hands-Only CPR, adult CPR with breaths, child CPR with breaths, adult and child AED use, infant CPR, and mild and severe airway block for adults, children, and infants. Skills are taught in a dynamic group environment using the AHA’s research-proven practice-while-watching technique, which provides students with the most hands-on CPR practice time possible.

Family & Friends CPR is for people who want to learn CPR but do not need a CPR course completion card to meet a job requirement. This course is ideal for community groups, new parents, grandparents, babysitters, and others interested in learning how to save a life.

This course is designed for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the resuscitation of a patient, whether in or out of a hospital. Through the ACLS course, providers will enhance their skills in the treatment of the adult victim of cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergencies. ACLS emphasizes the importance of basic life support (CPR) to patient survival; the integration of effective basic life support with advanced cardiovascular life support interventions; and the importance of effective team interaction and communication during resuscitation.

ACLS is based on simulated clinical scenarios that encourage active, hands-on participation through learning stations where students will practice essential skills individually, as part of a team, and as team leader. Realistic simulations reinforce the following key concepts: proficiency in basic life support care; recognizing and initiating early management of peri-arrest conditions; managing cardiac arrest; identifying and treating ischemic chest pain and acute coronary syndromes; recognizing other life-threatening clinical situations (such as stroke) and providing initial care; ACLS algorithms; and effective resuscitation team dynamics.

Intended Audience: The course is designed for healthcare providers, such as: physicians, nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and other professionals who may respond to a cardiovascular emergency.

Textbooks: Access to a current ACLS textbook is required before and during the course. Students may purchase a textbook through ATC upon registration. All students must complete the pre-test prior to attending the ACLS course with a minimum score of 70 and bring proof to class. Employees may also borrow a textbook from their facility’s Medical Library.

The goal of the PALS course is to aid the healthcare provider in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to efficiently and effectively manage critically ill infants and children, resulting in improved outcomes. Skills taught include recognition and treatment of infants and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest; the systematic approach to pediatric assessment; effective respiratory management; defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion; intraosseous access and fluid bolus administration; and effective resuscitation team dynamics.

Intended Audience: For pediatricians, emergency physicians, family physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, Paramedics, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare providers who direct or provide advanced life support in pediatric emergencies.

Textbooks: Access to a current PALS textbook is required before and during the course. Students may purchase a textbook through ATC upon registration. All students must complete the pre‑test prior to attending the PALS course with a minimum score of 70 and bring proof to class. Employees may also borrow a textbook from their facility’s Medical Library.
